Site Investigations

Mining investigations

Celtic Drilling Ltd was originally formed to meet the increasing demands in the mining investigation sector. Due to the amount of historical mining within Cornwall and the South West, most properties require a desktop mining survey to locate possible historical mining features. If the potential for features located within the properties boundaries exist, then a drilling investigation may be required to pinpoint any activity. Our purpose-built rigs ensure that maximum production is achieved whilst being able to access extremely restricted locations, ensuring all current and relevant health and safety legislations are adhered to. We also pride ourselves on the finish we achieve within this industry; we go over and above to leave a property as close as possible to its original condition. We also undertake mining investigations on large commercial sites.

Monitoring wells

Water and gas monitoring wells are sometimes required prior to building development to assess the potential for ground contamination such as methane, carbon dioxide, oxygen and other gases. Boreholes are drilled to varying required depths to facilitate the installation of pipework fitted with a gas tap and protected by a flushed or raised metal cover.

Ground Source

Ground Source heating is a method of harnessing latent heat stored in the ground and using it to produce energy for your home in the form of heating and hot water.

The heat pump system consists of a series or array of ground loops inserted into the ground via boreholes usually between 50 and 150m in depth. The number and depth of boreholes required will vary, depending on the individual property and the heat loss calculations for it. Typically, the temperature of rock is around 11 degrees Celsius from a depth of two metres and this doesn’t change, even through winter. It is this constant heat that the installed ground loops can tap into.

For every unit of energy consumed in the running of a Ground Source heating system, it is possible for four units to be extracted in the form of heating and hot water for your home. This, coupled with the Renewable Heating Incentive, makes the installation of Ground Source heating a definite consideration, whether in a new build or retrofit application.

Here at Celtic Drilling, we have a combined 30 years’ experience in the installation of ground loops via drilled boreholes. Utilising mini rigs, we specialise in retro fit and confined space systems and the control of drill cuttings and any ground water encountered. It’s a messy job, but we pride ourselves on our ability to leave a site in the same state of cleanliness as we found it.

Piling

At Celtic Drilling, we are able to undertake mini piling contracts, where ground conditions render traditional strip foundations ineffective. Steel cased bored mini piles, transfer the support of traditional foundations, to competent bedrock found at greater depths.

This enables building in areas of mass filled land, alluvial deposits or in areas where historic mining features lie negating the possibility of future subsidence. Mini piles can also be used to facilitate retaining wall systems or increased slope stability. For more information or technical enquiries, please contact us.

Water Boreholes

Water boreholes are a perfect solution for properties with no mains connection relying on a well or if you are simply looking at dramatically reducing the cost of your water supply. Boreholes are particularly beneficial for agricultural demands, off grid projects or if you would like control of your water quality.

Celtic Drilling are able to complete water borehole projects where required, utilising reputable companies to commission a system to WRAS (Water Regulation Advisory Scheme) standards. Suitable casing is utilised to stabilise any soils/subsoils and is grouted into competent bedrock to prevent surface runoff or any contaminants entering the supply. Holes are drilled to varying depths dictated by water ingress and individual client requirements. On completion of drilling, boreholes are lined with suitable borehole liner from top to bottom prior to pump installation.
